Sauna Maintenance — Year-Round Care Guide

Sauna Maintenance — Year-Round Care Guide

A well-maintained sauna lasts 20–30 years. A neglected one lasts 5. The maintenance routine isn't complicated — it just needs to actually happen. This guide covers the year-round care that keeps your STEALA cabin looking and performing like the day it shipped.

After every session (5 minutes)

  • Leave the door propped open for 30–60 minutes after the last session of the day. The wood needs to dry before the cabin cools all the way.
  • Wipe down any visible sweat from the benches with a clean towel.
  • For traditional saunas: empty the water bucket. Don't leave standing water inside.

That's it. The daily maintenance is light — most of the actual labor is at the seasonal level.

Monthly (15 minutes)

  • Vacuum or sweep the floor — especially under benches where lint and sweat residue collect.
  • Wipe down all interior wood surfaces with a clean damp cloth and a tiny amount of pH-neutral soap (never bleach, never ammonia-based cleaners).
  • Inspect the heater stones (for traditional/hybrid). Cracked stones produce inefficient heat transfer — replace any that are visibly fractured.
  • For outdoor cabins: check the door seal for daylight gaps when closed. Adjust hinge tension if needed.

Quarterly (1 hour)

  • Indoor cabins: lightly sand any high-wear areas of the bench (the spots where you actually sit) with 220-grit sandpaper. This refreshes the surface and removes the cumulative sweat staining. Wipe clean.
  • Outdoor cabins: inspect the exterior — look for moss, mildew, or water staining on the bottom edge of the wall panels. Clean with a soft brush and the same pH-neutral soap.
  • For outdoor traditional/hybrid: check the chimney/vent stack for debris. Leaves, bird nests, or insect colonies will affect airflow.
  • Heater control board check: power on, set timer, verify the thermostat trips correctly. A failing thermostat is the #1 cause of heater warranty claims.

Annually (half a day)

  • Indoor: remove the benches completely, clean the underside, vacuum the floor and walls behind, then reinstall.
  • Outdoor exterior wood treatment: apply a fresh coat of the matching wood oil (we recommend Owatrol Textrol on natural spruce, Penofin matte black on the Norhelm). This is what keeps the wood from greying out and cracking under UV.
  • Roof inspection: for barrel cabins, check the shingle integrity. Replace any cracked or lifted shingles.
  • Glass: deep-clean the tempered glass with a 50/50 white-vinegar-and-water mix. Avoid commercial window cleaners — they can leave residue.
  • Drainage: for outdoor cabins, verify the pad still drains correctly. Settle is normal in the first 2 years.

Year-2 and beyond

  • The Finnish vulcanite stones in traditional/hybrid heaters typically need replacement every 3–5 years. They lose density over time and become less efficient.
  • The carbon heating panels in infrared cabins are rated for 20+ years and rarely fail.
  • The heater control board is the most likely warranty-eligible failure. STEALA covers these for 1–2 years depending on model.
  • For outdoor cubes: the matte-black exterior oil coating needs a full refresh every 5–7 years depending on UV exposure.

What to never do

  • Power-wash the cabin (interior or exterior). Wood doesn't recover from forced-water damage.
  • Use bleach, ammonia, or any chlorine-based cleaner on the wood.
  • Leave water sitting on the floor or stones overnight.
  • Cover the cabin with a tarp when it's still warm — trapped moisture rots wood from the inside.
  • Run the heater dry (no water available for stones, in traditional models) — the heating element overheats.
